On maps where there is no self-spawned cannon an Artillery Train is needed to bring a cannon to the front line. But he would have to drop either his observing or firing duties for the ability to pick up shots and place them in cannon. The officer could always drop his sword and pick up a musket and ammo and act as the artillery's defence. He can place ammunition in the cannon and fire it but that is about all. The Officer comes equipped with a Spyglass, Officers Sword and a lighter. However it can be difficult unless it is your friend playing next to you. In an ideal world an artillery squad would have an officer to report back to the ranker at where the shot landed and where it needs to land. The Ranker can use all forms of artillery, friend or foe except the British Rocket Artillery. So unless someone else can pick-up shots, load the cannon or fire it the Ranker should ideally not pick up a firearm. He needs his cannon lighter to fire the cannon, and the ramrod to load it. If the Ranker picks up a dead mans musket, and trades his sword for cartridges, he will NOT be able to load shots into the cannon as he has used up all his 4 spaces in his weapons inventory.
However, he is useless if the map has no pre-spawned artillery on the map and will therefore need to be accompanied with a Artillery Train to bring the cannon into service. He has a ramrod and cannon lighter, so assuming there is piece of artillery somewhere on the map, he can use it. He is the basic bloke for an artillery squad. The term 'Cannon' in this section applies to any form of artillery except the British Rocket Artillery. There are now 5 different types of Artillery Crew found within the game, their roles will be outlined below.
